9 Tage. Mensch. is a residency program in the “Arthouse Bella Martha” in Marthashofen, Grafrath. Marthashofen is a retirement home, social therapy facility, kindergarten, café and an art house with studios.
Within the framework of our scholarship, we enable 9 art students and/or graduates as “artists in residence” to immerse themselves for nine days in the social structures of Marthashofen, to enter into an artistic interaction with the place and, above all, with the people living and working there. This format initiates art as a field of action in the social sphere and draws on its diversity of its participants. During their stay, the scholarship holders move between birth and death, between impairment and "normality". The diversity of encounters, the confrontation with the fullness of life becomes part of the artistic process and at the same time gives inspiration and enables exchange with the people who live and work there. Inspired by the Buddhist practice of "Samu", the artists’ work for one to two hours a day in an area of their choice on site - e.g. in the senior residency, in the kitchen, in the janitorial service or the kindergarten. This work is meditation and challenge, localization and connection. It serves the community as well as personal development and is to be seen as inspiration for the artistic work during the residency.
At the end of each residency there is a public exhibition in the large studio. When all residencies have taken place, the scholarship holders will return to Marthashofen where we will curate a group exhibition of all the artistic positions within the gallery “Kulturwerkstatt Haus 10” in Fürstenfeldbruck. A catalog will be published for this exhibition.
Studio, board and lodging, travel expenses (also for the group exhibition) as well as a subsidy for material will be provided. The Arthouse Bella Martha is responsible for advertising and public relations.
Art students and graduates from all disciplines can apply with a digital portfolio including vita, motivation and a short description of the planned artistic project to: kunsthaus@bellamartha.com
The following dates are planned for 2024/25 (Thu to Sun):
